Part 1 — Vendor-Neutral Discovery

🔍 Uncovering an Observability Use Case — Without Mentioning Any Vendor

This talk track is designed for your partner to use before any product enters the conversation. The goal is to uncover real pain around monitoring and observability so you can earn the right to propose a solution. No product names, no vendor pitches — just good questions that surface problems worth solving.

The Opening Frame (30 seconds)

"We work with a lot of engineering teams, and one pattern keeps coming up: the tools they use to monitor their systems end up creating as much work as they save. I'm not here to pitch you anything — I'd just like to understand how your team handles observability today. If there's a better way to do it, great. If not, you've lost nothing."
Why this works: It positions the partner as a peer advisor, not a salesperson. It sets the expectation that this is a conversation, not a demo. And it uses the word "observability" naturally without attaching it to any product.

💬 Discovery Question Bank

Choose 3–4 questions based on what you know about the account. Start broad, then go deep on whatever draws the strongest reaction.

1. Visibility & Coverage

Goal: understand how complete their monitoring picture actually is.

2. Cost & Complexity

Goal: surface the hidden tax of running monitoring infrastructure.

3. Incident Response & Speed

Goal: quantify the pain of slow diagnosis and resolution.

4. Scale & Future State

Goal: understand where they're headed and whether current tools will break.

5. Security & Governance

Goal: surface compliance and access control gaps.

🎯 Signals to Listen For

These responses indicate real pain worth pursuing. When you hear them, go deeper — don't rush to a solution.

What They SayWhat It MeansFollow Up With
"We check 4–5 different tools during an incident" Fragmented monitoring; no unified view "How much time does that context-switching add to your resolution?"
"We have two engineers who basically maintain our monitoring full-time" High hidden cost; engineering talent on undifferentiated work "If you could redirect those two engineers, what would they be working on?"
"Our monitoring bill doubled last year" Cost pressure; unpredictable pricing model "Was that driven by data growth, or did pricing change? What's the plan for next year?"
"We get too many alerts — people ignore them" Alert fatigue; reliability risk "What's your ratio of actionable alerts to noise? How does that affect on-call morale?"
"We can't easily connect metrics to logs to traces" Siloed data; slow root cause analysis "When you need to correlate signals, how do you do it today — manually, or is there tooling?"
"Honestly, there are things we know we should be monitoring but aren't" Visibility gaps; potential blind spots in production "What's stopping you from closing those gaps — time, tooling, or something else?"

🌉 Bridging to a Deeper Conversation

Once you've uncovered pain, use one of these bridges to transition to a follow-up meeting. Still no vendor name needed — just the promise of a relevant conversation.

"Based on what you've described — [reflect their specific pain back to them] — it sounds like there are some meaningful gains on the table. We work with a platform that addresses exactly this. Would it be worth 30 minutes for us to walk through what a better setup could look like for your team, side by side with what you have today?"
"That's really helpful context. I think there's a conversation worth having about how teams in your position are solving this — without ripping out what's working. Can we schedule a short session with one of our solutions architects to explore it?"
Key principle: Reflect their words back to them. If they said "we spend too much time maintaining," your bridge should say "the maintenance burden you described." If they said "alert fatigue," mirror it exactly. This proves you listened and makes the meeting feel relevant, not generic.
Part 2 — Grafana Cloud Talk Track

🚀 Opening Hook — From OSS to Cloud

Use this when the account already runs Grafana OSS or is new to Grafana entirely.

"Your team already chose Grafana — and for good reason. But most OSS deployments eventually hit a ceiling: the engineers running the stack are spending more time maintaining observability than actually using it. We're seeing teams reclaim that time by letting Grafana Cloud handle the undifferentiated work — upgrades, HA, scaling, plugin management — so they can focus on the things that actually move the business forward."
Why this works: It validates their existing choice (Grafana), acknowledges their expertise, and reframes "migration" as a natural evolution rather than an indictment of their current setup.

🎯 Three Pain Seeds

Pick the one that best fits the account based on your discovery conversation.

1. The Hidden Cost Angle

Best for accounts with growing infrastructure

"Here's the question we keep hearing from teams like yours: how many engineers are dedicated to maintaining your observability stack? Not using it — maintaining it. Upgrades, scaling storage, troubleshooting compatibility issues. Those are hours that aren't going toward building features your customers actually see. If that number is more than zero, it's worth a conversation."

2. The Security & Governance Angle

Best for regulated industries or enterprises

"Open-source Grafana is powerful, but it wasn't built for enterprise security out of the box. No SAML, no RBAC, no data source permissions. As your team scales and compliance requirements tighten, that gap becomes a real operational risk. Grafana Cloud includes all of that — SSO, role-based access, audit logging — without requiring a separate Enterprise license."

3. The "What You're Missing" Angle

Best for teams that think OSS is "good enough"

"OSS gives you the building blocks, and that's solid. But Cloud unlocks capabilities that don't exist in the open-source version: AI-powered root cause analysis with Grafana Assistant, integrated SLO management, Adaptive Telemetry to control costs, turnkey observability for Kubernetes and applications, and incident response workflows — all connected. Teams that have been on OSS for years are often surprised by how much the managed platform has evolved beyond what they know."

🤝 Bridge to Discovery Meeting

"We're not asking you to rip anything out. The product is the same core — your dashboards, your alerts, your queries all carry over. What we'd love is 30 minutes to walk through what your current stack looks like and show you specifically where Cloud would save your team time and unlock capabilities you don't have today. No commitment — just a side-by-side."

📊 Proof Points

SignalEvidence
TCO savings A media technology company cut metrics volume by 60%, expanded trace retention from 7 → 30 days and metrics from 14 days → 13 months, saving hundreds of engineering hours per year after migrating to Cloud.
"We lost sight of what we set out to do" A healthcare technology company shared that while they loved open source, along the way they lost sight of their original goals — Cloud let them refocus on observability outcomes rather than infrastructure management.
Enterprise security Major banks and financial institutions run on Grafana Cloud in highly regulated environments.
Single pane of glass A payments company unified MongoDB, Prometheus, AWS X-Ray, and CloudWatch into a single Grafana Cloud view.

🛡️ Objection Handling

ObjectionResponse
"We're happy with OSS" "That's great — you've built something that works. The question isn't whether OSS is good; it's whether your engineers' time is best spent maintaining it. Cloud is the same product, managed for you, with enterprise features included."
"We're regulated — we need on-prem" "Totally understand. We work with some of the most regulated companies in the world. Our ask is just to investigate Cloud as a first option — there's an apples-to-oranges difference in what's possible."
"Migration sounds painful" "Dashboards and alerts are JSON — they come over as-is. Most teams run Cloud in parallel first, validate everything matches, and then cut over. No rip-and-replace."
"We don't have budget" "Grafana Cloud has a generous free tier — enough to prove value without a PO. And when you factor in the infrastructure and engineering time you're spending to self-manage, Cloud often costs less than what you're running today."
"Our team built this — they're proud of it" "They should be. But ask them how they feel about upgrading Prometheus for the fifth time this year. Cloud lets them keep the craft — dashboards, queries, alert logic — and lose the chores."

Partner Pro Tips

💡 Tips for Your Partner

🔑 Start with Part 1 Use the vendor-neutral discovery first. Earn the right to pitch by demonstrating you understand their world before mentioning any product.
🙌 Don't sell against OSS Sell the upgrade. The customer chose Grafana for a reason. Respect that choice and position Cloud as the natural evolution.
👤 Find the right person The OSS admin may be the most resistant. Engineering managers and end-users are often more receptive — they feel the pain without owning the stack.
🔢 Lead with "how many FTEs?" "How many engineers maintain your observability stack?" is the single best wedge question. That number is the opening.
🆓 Use the free tier Grafana Cloud's free tier is generous enough to demonstrate real value without budget approval. Lower the barrier to entry.
🪞 Mirror their language When bridging from discovery to a meeting, reflect their exact words back. If they said "alert fatigue," use "alert fatigue" — not "notification challenges."
