A clear, side-by-side comparison to help you choose the right observability platform for your business
Prepared September 2026
Open, flexible, cost-effective. Built on open-source and OpenTelemetry. You pay only for what you use. No vendor lock-in — your data and instrumentation are always yours. Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader 3 years in a row.
All-in-one, polished UI. Strong out-of-the-box experience with many integrations. But pricing is complex — per host + per metric + per GB. Bills often grow 40–80% higher than expected. Uses proprietary agents that create vendor lock-in.
Both Grafana Cloud and Datadog are full observability platforms. They both collect metrics, logs, and traces. They both have dashboards and alerting.
The key differences are:
| Feature | Grafana Cloud | Datadog |
|---|---|---|
| How You Pay | Pay for what you use. No per-host fees. Simple consumption pricing. You can see the cost before you sign. | Per host + per metric + per GB + per event. Many billing dimensions. Custom metrics cost extra ($5 per 100 metrics/month). Bills are hard to predict. |
| Cost Control | Adaptive Telemetry automatically finds and removes data you are not using — across metrics, logs, traces, and profiles. You collect more data while paying less. No other vendor has this. | No automatic cost optimization. To reduce costs, you must manually disable features or reduce data retention — which makes it harder to find and fix problems. |
| Vendor Lock-in | No lock-in. Uses OpenTelemetry (open standard). One agent called Alloy (open source). If you leave Grafana, your instrumentation stays. | High lock-in. Uses a proprietary agent. Data stored in proprietary format. Leaving Datadog means re-instrumenting every service — a big, expensive project. |
| Infrastructure Monitoring | ~$18/host/month. Adaptive Metrics automatically removes unused metrics to save cost. | $15–$23/host/month (Pro/Enterprise) + extra charges for custom metrics. Costs grow fast when you add more servers. |
| Log Management | ~$0.55/GB total (ingest + store for 30 days). Uses label-based indexing — much cheaper at high volume. | $0.10/GB ingest + $1.70 per million indexed events. Logs are often 35–40% of the total Datadog bill. |
| APM (Application Monitoring) | ~$7.50/host/month. Built on OpenTelemetry — no proprietary SDK needed. | $31–$40/host/month. Requires Datadog's own agent and SDK. |
| Agent (Data Collector) | Grafana Alloy — one lightweight, open-source agent that collects metrics, logs, and traces. Uses less resources on your servers. | Proprietary Datadog agent. Heavier on resources. Can auto-enable features you did not ask for — which also increases your bill. |
| Kubernetes | Single Helm chart to deploy. Consumption pricing means when you scale pods down, the bill goes down too. | Per-host + per-container billing. Short-lived containers (common in Kubernetes) create cost spikes. |
| AI Features | Grafana Assistant: Build dashboards from screenshots, ask questions in plain English, automatic incident investigation. Works across ALL connected data sources — even non-Grafana ones. | Watchdog AI (finds anomalies), Bits AI (answers questions). Only works with data inside Datadog — not with external sources. |
| Alerting & Incidents | Unified alerting across all data sources. Grafana IRM (incident management) at $20/active user. | Incident Management at $30/seat — on top of the already expensive platform. |
| Data Standards | OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, open source. Data is portable. Export freely. | Proprietary formats. Migration requires re-instrumentation. |
| Indonesia Region | Yes — Jakarta (AWS ap-southeast-3). First observability platform in this region. Data stays in Indonesia. | No dedicated Indonesia region. Nearest is likely Singapore or Japan. |
| AWS Marketplace | Yes. Buy through AWS Marketplace. Use existing AWS spend commitments (EDP). | Yes. Also available on AWS Marketplace. |
| Industry Recognition | Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader — 3 years running (2024, 2025, 2026). Highest in Completeness of Vision. | Gartner MQ Leader. Strong execution, but falling behind on vision. |
| Free Tier | Yes — forever free. 10K metrics, 50GB logs, 50GB traces, 3 users. No credit card needed. Great for testing. | 14-day free trial only. No permanent free tier. |
Grafana's consumption pricing is simple: you pay for what you use. No per-host fees. No hidden charges. Adaptive Telemetry actively reduces waste. Customers who switch from Datadog typically save 40–60%.
Grafana is built on OpenTelemetry and open source. Your instrumentation is portable. If you ever want to switch vendors, you can — without re-doing months of work. Datadog's proprietary agent makes switching very difficult and expensive.
Grafana Assistant works across all 180+ connected data sources — including non-Grafana tools. Datadog's AI only works with Datadog's own data. During a migration, Grafana AI can reason across both old and new systems.
Only Grafana automatically finds and removes data you are not using — across metrics, logs, traces, and profiles. This breaks the rule that \"more data = higher bill.\" No other vendor has this across all four signal types.
Grafana Cloud has a dedicated Jakarta region (AWS ap-southeast-3) — the first observability platform hosted in that region. Data stays in Indonesia. Important for companies with data sovereignty requirements.
Grafana customers get direct access to engineers, shared Slack channels, transparent pricing, and executive support — not just during the sale, but after. This is the #1 thing customers mention unprompted.
We believe in being honest. Here are the areas where Datadog has advantages. Knowing this helps you prepare for the conversation.
Datadog is very polished out of the box. Auto-discovery, pre-built dashboards, and a smooth UI mean users can start seeing data quickly with less setup. This is Datadog's real strength — not pricing, not features.
How to handle this: Mention Grafana's AI Assistant (builds dashboards from screenshots). Offer guided onboarding and pre-built dashboards. The gap is closing fast, but it needs to be planned.
Datadog has session replay for web applications — you can watch a recording of what the user saw in their browser. Grafana's Frontend Observability covers Real User Monitoring (RUM) but session replay is newer.
How to handle this: Ask if the customer actually needs session replay. For infrastructure monitoring, network monitoring, and backend systems — which is most use cases — this feature is not relevant.
This is an example to show how pricing compares. The exact numbers depend on your specific usage.
Scenario: 100 servers, 50GB of logs per day, basic application monitoring on 20 services, 30-day data retention.
| What You Pay For | Grafana Cloud | Datadog |
|---|---|---|
| Server Monitoring (100 servers) | ~$1,800/month | ~$2,300/month |
| Log Storage (50GB/day) | ~$825/month | ~$150/month ingest + indexing (can reach $2,500+/month) |
| Application Monitoring (20 services) | ~$150/month | ~$620/month |
| Extra Metrics Charges | Included — no extra cost | $5 per 100 custom metrics — adds up fast |
| Estimated Monthly Total | ~$2,775/month | ~$5,500+/month (before extra charges) |
⚠️ Important notes:
• These are estimates based on published prices. Actual costs depend on your usage and contract terms.
• Datadog often gives 30–50% discounts during negotiations — but customers report that extra charges (overages) add 40–80% back on top.
• Ask Grafana Labs for a free cost calculator to get an exact estimate for your situation.
Saved 50% on costs. Reduced time to fix problems by 50%. Switched from Datadog to Grafana Cloud in just 3 months. Increased log storage from 7 days to 30 days — while still paying less than before.
Projected 50–80% cost savings. Named Datadog replacement. Built everything from scratch using OpenTelemetry. Signed a 4-year commitment with Grafana Labs.
Datadog's billing forced them to cut data — which directly hurt their ability to find and fix problems. Switched to Grafana for predictable costs and full data access.
Was on Datadog with only 7 days of log retention and disabled features — just to control costs. Switched to Grafana to get full retention and visibility back.
Calls Adaptive Telemetry the \"Save Money button.\" Saves approximately $1.74 million per year with Grafana Cloud.
Reduced time to fix problems from 60 minutes to 25 minutes using Grafana AI. Complex incidents that took 3 hours are now solved in minutes.
"With Grafana, you pay for what you actually use — not per server. And we have a feature called Adaptive Telemetry that automatically removes data you are not using, so your bill stays low even as your infrastructure grows."
"Grafana uses OpenTelemetry — an open standard. You set up your instrumentation once, and it works with Grafana or any other platform. If you ever want to change vendors, your work is not lost. With Datadog, you would have to start over."
"Grafana Cloud has a dedicated region in Jakarta — on AWS. Your data stays in Indonesia. We were the first observability platform to have a region there. You can also buy through AWS Marketplace."
"That used to be true. But now Grafana has an AI Assistant that can build dashboards from a screenshot in minutes. And we provide guided onboarding and pre-built dashboards for your specific systems. The setup experience has changed a lot."
"Grafana has more than 10,000 paying customers including NASA, Dell, PayPal, and JP Morgan. We have been named a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for three years in a row. Almost 1,000 engineers work on the platform every day."
